OUR DEMANDS

Extinction Rebellion is a politically non-partisan international movement that uses non-violent direct action to persuade governments to act justly on the Climate and Ecological Emergency.

We have four demands:

A JUST TRANSITION

A just transition that prioritises social justice; establishes reparations and remediation led by and for Black people, people of colour, minority, poor and vulnerable communities for decades of environmental injustice, establishes legal rights for ecosystems to thrive and regenerate, and repair the effects of ongoing ecocide in order to maintain a liveable, just planet for all

TELL THE TRUTH

The Government must tell the truth by declaring a climate and ecological emergency, working with other institutions to communicate the urgency for change.

ACT NOW

Government must act now to halt biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025.

BEYOND POLITICS

Government must create and be led by the decisions of a Citizens’ Assembly on climate and ecological justice.

INCLUSION OF DEMAND ZERO: A JUST TRANSITION

"In the context of the #BlackLivesMatter movement, many of our activists are involved in fighting racial injustice, others are coming to terms with the prejudice and contradictory ideas we have inherited through a system that perpetuates racism and exploitation, and we support all those taking action to end racism.

We have discussed the need to put intersectional environmentalism at the heart of our movement, and to work on implementing our fourth demand for a just transition as have other XR Groups. We believe that there cannot be climate justice in a world without social justice, and that a future based on our demands must be a future without oppression of any kind, a future that everyone can look forward to.

We in XR Norwich have decided to adopt a fourth demand (demand Zero). Inclusion in our community is paramount; and we have a responsibility to be specific about prejudicial treatment of different groups of people because, if we aren’t, we are dishonest, hypocritical and complicit in this treatment.  As a movement we acknowledge that climate change affects some communities more than others. We must support and stand in solidarity with BIPOC, LGBTQ+, Disabled People, and communities affected by poverty and class discrimination. If we don’t, we will continue to marginalise these groups and contribute to the toxic system we say we are against.

We must focus on a ‘just transition’, where change to zero emissions is centred on communities adversely impacted by climate change.  Adopting a Demand Zero means placing arguments for global climate ‘justice’ into every aspect of our work.  This is consistent with our values, namely, challenging ourselves by rising above this toxic system and using our privilege to do so. We will be giving voice to narratives of climate refugees and of those at the sharp end of climate change. We have become a larger, global XR organism, we should take the opportunity to learn from it."
